Saints & Sinners Cemetery
Saints & Sinners Cemetery, located in the City of Oak Hill, Florida, is a long neglected site. It is situated 4 miles down a four wheel drive path which at most times is nearly impossible to navigate, unless you're a vandal.
The City of Oak Hill was founded by a freed African American Slave and his Native American wife. They were both interred in the saints side of the cemetery, which was reserved for the more affluent in town. Unfourtunatley out of the 64 known burials in that side of the cemetery, we only know where 4 people are. The rest of the headstones have either been destroyed or stolen. And that is the good side of the cemetery.
The sinners side of the cemetery, which was reserved for the paupers in town is still in use today. There is everything from hunters dressing thier deer kill on the tops of vaults, bullet holes in every solid headstone (including WWI, WWII, Vietnam & Korean Conflict Veterans), sinking sites, missing and damaged stones, someone collected the metal markers and put them into a pile in the woods, and we are still boycotting the Flowers Bakery Company because they continue to dump stale bakery products in the middle of the cemetery.
The current City Council members for the City of Oak Hill show little to no interest in restoring or preserving this site. We have tried our best to make headway in this site, but due to the lack of volunteers and cooperation, I am sad to report that this site is "on hold" for further assistance.
The site was documented by Kourtnie James and the reports turned over to the AGS & The Saving Graves Foundation.
UPDATE!
This project is currently on hold due to the fact that the City of Oak Hill allowed burials on property that was not allocated for the cemetery. Kourtnie James has been in touch with the owners of the property that the burials have taken place on and we are in the process of purchasing the site. Now we are fighting some very hard zoning battles. I'll keep you posted.
